With the New Year I can reflect on my past year at Michiana Behavioral Health. It has been an exciting and challenging 2015. It has been a pleasure working with compassionate staff and providing acute and residential services for our patients and their families. We have made major changes during 2015 to continuously improve both the environment and services we provide. I would like to share such improvements;

In April we became eligible to participate in the State HIP program and help numerous patients to obtain presumptive eligibility on site. In 2015 we serviced 172 HIP patients.

We treated 1784 new patients in 2015 which included 276 more admissions than 2014.

We were able to expand our detoxification and Chemical Dependency adult program and depending on the population we can split CD and Psychiatric programming.

We have improved our evidenced based treatment by incorporating Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) to our residential program which has resulted in improved treatment outcomes. We will expand DBT to our Acute populations in 2016.

We have initiated numerous environmental changes that included, renovating a second adult unit, upgrading lighting and furniture, landscaping improvements, updating nursing stations, separating programs by gender and age by adding doors, inclosing community rooms to offer patients more group privacy, installing a privacy fence and purchased and upgraded furniture.

We have emphasized community partnerships and relationships which is instrumental to our success.  This included donations to first responders, backpacks for school students and shop with a cop.  We have contracted local vendors to assist us in our vision to service more patients.

We continue to be active in affiliations and associations to advocate for the expansion of Mental Health services and legislating for proper access to all levels of Mental Health care.  Some of our efforts have included Mental Health Parity advocacy and association membership with the local Chamber of Commerce, NAMI, MHA, NAPHS, and IARCA.

Our ability to service more patients at the right time at the right level of care has positioned Michiana to become the provider of choice.  Although, we had a successful year we need to continue to strive to be the best treatment facility for our clients.  We will continue our efforts in 2016 and always know that we can continue to improve our services.  Recognizing these are trying times,  we look forward to strive for safety and positive outcomes.  All our patients deserve it.
